Portland, Oregon
Portland is Oregon’s most populous city and is located at the convergence of the Columbia and Willamette rivers. Portland was officially incorporated on February 8, 1851, and had a steam sawmill, a log cabin hotel, and a weekly newspaper. Portland served as a major port in the Pacific for most of the 19th century.
Portland is known as the Rose City but has many other nicknames as well. The city was originally known as “Stumptown” because of the logging companies early in its existence to clear the land for development. Other names include “Bridgetown” because of its many bridges and “Puddletown” because of its seemingly endless rain.
Most of Portland’s culture, recreation, education, business, retail and governmental resources are found downtown. There is the Waterfront Park, The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall, Portland Art Museum, Portland State University, Lewis & Clark College, and the Portland Japanese Garden. In the northwest side of Portland is the Pearl District, Chinatown.
